About this preview

This site is a first-iteration preview of the RackN TechOps Handbook as a docs-style book. It is for internal review and is not published.

  • All 18 chapters, converted from the current Word drafts with light cleanup only. The editorial change log lists every change.
  • A PDF of each chapter, built when the site builds, with a cover, running header, and page numbers.
  • An interactive walkthrough of BMC-to-ready onboarding in Digital Rebar, embedded in the out-of-band management chapter. Its sources are listed in Walkthrough sources.
  • Full-text search, a sidebar for the whole book, an on-page table of contents, and previous and next links on every chapter.

The drafts were written as a numbered series that started with APIs. This preview leads with the bare metal chapters instead, because they are the closest to publishable and the closest to what RackN sells.

Part Chapters Why it sits here
Start Here Introduction to the Series Frames the series and its audience
1. Bare Metal Foundations Out-of-Band Management, Practical Hardware Checks, UEFI Secure Boot Day 0 work on physical servers, with the most field detail in the set
2. Automation Interfaces Command Line Interfaces, API Design, API Consumption, Asynchronous APIs How automation talks to infrastructure, from the CLI to event-driven APIs
3. Packaging and Running Ops Software Containerization, Container Management, systemd, Governance and SBOM How ops tooling is packaged, supervised, and governed
4. Production Operations Logs, Metrics, and Traces, SSH Security and Access, High Availability Day 2 work once systems are running
5. Strategy, AI, and Team Culture AI and Data Sovereignty, AI and Digital Twins, The Two-But Rule Wider topics that sit outside the technical spine

The site uses Astro with the Starlight docs theme, the same framework family as the new RackN site. Starlight provides the sidebar, on-page table of contents, Pagefind search, previous and next links, Expressive Code highlighting, and a responsive layout out of the box. A Python script converts the Word files to Markdown and logs each change. After the Astro build, a second script prints each chapter to PDF with headless Chrome.

  • The chapter text still reads as generated textbook copy, and most RackN-specific material from the first drafts is missing from the second drafts.
  • No chapter covers AI Factory, Sovereign AI, Bare Metal AI, or Neocloud operations.
  • Several chapters contain case studies and statistics with no source, and a few factual errors. EVALUATION.md lists them by chapter.
  • Most chapters end their sections with “plug these search terms into ChatGPT” boxes, which send readers away from RackN.

Preview edition, October 2026. Chapter text is the current draft with light cleanup only.
